Becoming the person others will follow: Part II

COMMENT:        Becoming the person others will want to follow.

(An Extract from Dr. John C Maxwell’s 21 Indispensable qualities of a Leader).

We started looking into becoming the person others will want to follow yesterday, and we were made to understand that the first quality we need to work on as leaders is our character.

Quality 2

CHARISMA

When you perfect you character another thing you need to develop as a leader is your Charisma. Now people will say that charisma is something mystical or undefinable i.e. people think it is a quality that comes at birth. But that’s not true. Charisma plainly stated is the ability to draw people to you. And like other character traits it can be developed. As leaders we have to make ourselves the kind of person that attract others, and that is to make everybody we meet important to us.

What we can do for people that will also make them attracted to us as leasders is to expect the best of them. It helps others to thing more highly of themselves and at the same time it helps us.

If we appreciate others, encourage them and help them reach their potential, they will love us for it. Now, we have to rate ourselves when it comes to charisma and the only way to do that is to check ourselves and see if we possess one of these roadblocks to charisma which are pride, insecurity, moodiness, perfectionism, bad temper and cynicism.

To improve our charisma we need to do the following;

1.      Change Your Focus: as we talk to others we should be determined we should be determined to tip the balance of our discussion in favour of focusing on them. We should reduce how much of that conversation is focus on ourselves and focus more on the people we are relating with, and this will give them a sense of belonging.

2.     Play the First impression Game: when we meet someone for the first time, we should try our best to make a good impression. Learn the person’s name, focus on his or her interest, be positive and most importantly make them have a sense of belonging.

3.     Share yourself: We should make it our long-term goal to share our resources with others. We should think of how we can add value to people’s life and provide resources to help them grow personally and professionally.

Charismatic leaders are the ones who have their enthusiasm rub off on others by being extremely positive and energetic.  Charismatic leaders sell their visions to others, they are inspiring and they drive results.
