Becoming the person others will follow

COMMENT:        Becoming the person others becoming the person others will want to follow.

(An Extract from Dr. John C Maxwell’s 21 Indispensable qualities of a Leader).

Everybody in this world who’s got a dream, goal or target is a potential leader. We as human sometimes fail to realize that what is standing between us and our dreams is leadership. According to Dr. John C. Maxwell “Everything rises and falls with leadership.

Now, we all have what it takes to become a great leader, the kind that will make things happen. But first we have to look at ourselves deep down to locate these qualities that will make us fulfil our potential and also love out our boldest dreams.

The qualities highlighted by Dr. John C. Maxwell are what truly makes one fulfil their destinies in life and I totally agree with him.

CHARACTER

First of all we need to know that understanding leadership and actually leading are two different activities. Therefore we need to understand that character is like a foundation in which our dreams are being built upon i.e. without character, we are going nowhere.

Being a leader means having people who follow you but what truly makes people want to follow a leader? The key to becoming a great leader is to transform ourselves from someone who understand leadership to someone who successfully leads, now thats character.

Our character qualities activate and empower leadership in us or they can stand in the way of our dreams and success no matter how talented we are.

How a leader handles the circumstances of life tells you many things about his or her character. Crisis doesn’t necessarily make character but it certainly does reveal it. As leaders we are always going to have to make a choice between character and compromise and every time a leader chooses character, he becomes stronger even if that choice brings negative consequences.

The development of character is at the heart of our development not just as leaders but as human beings. So therefore, we need to ask ourselves whether our words and actions match all the time. When we say we’ll finish an assignment do we always follow through? Can people trust us to the as they would trust a legal document? We can improve our character through the following ways;

Search For Cracks: spend sometime as individuals looking at major areas of our lives and identify anywhere we have cut corners, compromised or let people. Only by knowing our fault can we truly discover our weakness.

Look for Patterns: Is there a particular area where we  have a weakness i.e. a type of problem that keeps resurfacing? If you have found that out then move to the next stage.

Face the Music: The beginins of character repair starts when we identify our flaws or mistakes or shortcomings, face them, apologise and deal with the consequences of our actions. We can only achieve this by being ready and determines to take responsibility for our actions.

Rebuild: Now that we have identified our areas of weakness we need to devise a plan that will enable or prevent us from repeating those mistakes again.

No matter how talented we are it is character that truly protects our talent, if we don’t have the right blend of character then our dreams, potentials and talents as leaders will all go to waste. Work on you character and every other thing will work out for you.
